J. David Goodman and Annie Correal write:

“Nine people were shot, none fatally, after an altercation at a party early Sunday morning in Brooklyn, the police said.

The gunfire erupted around 2:15 a.m. in the backyard of a two-story brick-front home on the corner of Stanley Avenue and Crescent Street in East New York, the police said. Neighbors said the home was often the scene of loud backyard parties that stretched well into the morning, though the nature of the dispute that led to the shooting was not immediately known, the police said.

The violence came after several days of relative calm across the city, with shootings abating compared with the same period last year. Since June, the Police Department has sent additional officers to the most violent areas of the city in an effort to stem a rise in shootings earlier this year. One of those precincts is the 75th in East New York, where the nine people were shot and where despite the additional officers, shootings and homicides have been up compared with last year.

At the same time, the department’s leaders have focused increased attention on the small number of people believed to be behind the shootings, mostly young men who have a history of arrests on gun charges and, in some cases, have been shot themselves.”
