Teenager Accused of Raping 82-Year-Old Woman Is Arrested

A teenage rape suspect who had eluded the police since they said he attacked an 82-year-old woman at her home earlier this week was taken into custody early Friday.

The suspect, Asa Roberts, 18, was found in a brownstone building in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, a home that officials believed he broke into during a cat-and-mouse-type police pursuit that had stretched over four days.

Mr. Roberts was taken into custody without incident, the police said.

Details were still emerging. But the police said that, based on preliminary accounts, they expected Mr. Roberts to be charged with attacking the woman Monday after allegedly slipping into her house in Brighton Beach while she was outside sweeping the street.

When the woman went back into her house, and into her bedroom, her assailant, armed with a knife, demanded money, the police said. The woman said she had none, and the suspect stayed in her home for several hours, they said. Then, at around 4 a.m., he raped her, the police said.

From the start, teams of officers converged on the neighborhood, fanning out to try to catch the suspect. On Wednesday he was identified as Mr. Roberts.
