Having met Gilbert Adair for the first time on Monday, February 19th, Sophie Lewis, the European Manager of publishing house, “Dalkey Archive Press“, and an Assistant Editor of Interlitq, came away from the meeting as impressed with Adair in person as she is with his books (the latest of these, “And Then There Was No One” was published earlier this month). Lewis will soon be transcribing her interview with Adair, which will be published in a forthcoming issue of the review, and will address many of Adair’s central concerns such as his interest in “doubling, twinning, mirrors, from Twin Towers to alter egos”, as Lewis puts it, and his desire to move beyond his post-modern period. Lewis, who recently published her translation of a work by Marcel Aymé, entitled “Beautiful Image”, and is as much of a Francophile as Adair, is very much looking forward to meeting the novelist again. A fitting occasion will be the February 11th screening (with post-screening discussion) of Louis Malle’s film “Zazie dans le métro” at the Institut Francais in Kensington. Adair, who wrote the introduction to a recent re-edition of Queneau’s book, originally published fifty years ago, and on which this film is based, will be participating in the discussion alongside fellow Oulipians: Marcel Bénabou, Paul Fournel and Jacques Roubaud.
Great! I look forward to reading the interview.
